National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Each year, on September 30, we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day provides us with an opportunity to honour the children who never returned home and to show our support for the survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. We encourage you to take a moment of silence, allowing for reflection on the significance of this day.

As individuals, we have the ability to support reconciliation efforts. Here are a few ways you can take action:

Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about the history, cultures, and issues facing Indigenous peoples in Canada. Reading books, watching documentaries, and attending lectures or workshops on Indigenous topics can be a good starting point.

Support Indigenous-Owned Businesses: This can include purchasing Indigenous-made products, artwork, and crafts.

Engage in Dialogue: Engage in respectful and open conversations about Indigenous issues with friends, family, and colleagues. Encourage others to learn and reflect on these topics as well.

Participate in Indigenous Events: Attend Indigenous cultural events, ceremonies, and festivals to gain a better understanding of their traditions and to show support for Indigenous communities.

Volunteer: Look for volunteer opportunities with Indigenous organizations or community initiatives. Many organizations welcome volunteers to assist with a variety of projects and programs.

Learn about Residential Schools: Understand the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada. Support initiatives aimed at truth and reconciliation.

Challenge Stereotypes: Challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Indigenous peoples. Encourage others to do the same.

Cultural Appreciation vs. Appropriation: Be mindful of the difference between appreciating Indigenous culture and appropriating it. Avoid using Indigenous cultural symbols, clothing, or art in a disrespectful or inappropriate manner.
